type='text'>Pitch Correction Observation

On a forum I read this interesting comment.

Basically the poster is saying that in order for pitch correction to work properly you should record the original track without any compression, reverb, chorus or doubling otherwise the pitch correction software cannot correctly detect and hence correct the pitch. With reverb for example it may correct the reverb part differently than the original part.

The advice is to record dry (monitor with effects if you have that option) and then add your effects later.

Not sure if it's accurate but it's definitely interesting.

A wide range of free plugin's

Came across a very interesting site. She left an indelible mark on rock music as a founding member of The Runaways, which featured fellow rockers Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, and as a leading inspiration for a number of notable musicians, both male and female. Many young musicians can trace their inspiration directly to the first time they heard "Cherry Bomb." She will be remembered by more than one generation of fans as a strong part of their musical landscape. But Sandy's impact was felt far outside of the music industry as a loyal friend, loving confidante and strong defender of those she loved most. Her strength as a player, passion as a person, and dedication as a friend will be remembered always by friends, fans and fellow musicians alike.

http://therunaways.com/

Windows Vista Installation

Soundclick Paid Services: How They Work, Do They Work

If anyone wants screen shots of VIP pages and the like then let me know but they are not that exciting.

http://www.soundclick.com

$9.95 for VIP

The main things this get you

• No ads on your page
• Customizable home page for song (in addition to the standard one)
• Deep Linking (see below)
• 50% discount on paid promotions (see below)
• Larger file size uploads (MP3 above 128)
• Extra points with song plays for chart position

I signed up for VIP 10/1/06, just after the release of my latest song

My last song on 9/9 registered 110 plays in the first 5 days

This one registered around 200. At the end of 5 days my song was 122 on the main Pop chart.

On 10/6 I paid $15 for a single day as the “featured” song on the pop charts page.

That single day I got 126 song plays and moved up to #12 on the main charts. Now that I’m featured on page 1 of the main charts I start to get more residual plays. Getting 400 plays on the next 3 days.

10/10 I Did the deep linking experiment, the song auto plays and counts as a play when you access HMHS website or that thread in 2090. This gave me an extra 200 plays over the next 4 days.

Since then I’ve got about 40 plays per day which is 25 or so better than normal, probably still a residual effect and from being high in the Pop-General chart. The song got as high as #4 on the pop general chart, sank down to 20 but has bounced back to #4 yesterday, not sure why.

Net result ($15 + $9.95 per month) got me 650 plays in a couple of weeks, instead of the 200 or so I usually get. For example “Fake Love” which is my “hit” got 550 plays over a month.

FYI: Manzana and my cover of Wake Me Up When September Ends has had at least one play a day for almost 12 months and currently shows 2,800 plays.

VIP stats are not that interesting. You get almost nothing worth having in my opinion. Even the Hot/Flop votes only show up for the most recent day. All you really get is an idea of where your listeners come from web wise and location wise.

Is it worth it ? Who know, it’s fun to know that 150 people heard your song in a day and that I got 40 or so downloads but for $15 I’m not so sure. The $9.95 per month with deep linking and customizable home page is a decent value that I think might be worth it for some. I gave quick rundown of the primary hardware such as a soundcard, cables, and the guitar setup. I have had this setup running on a P3 700 with 640mb memory and it did fine. I made my first CD, Middle Of The Storm, and half of my 2nd one, Scattered Showers, with this setup. (you can check them out by following the link in my sig).

This setup has been put together and tested over a 2 year period by myself and a few other artist on the Kristal forum. And sorry all you Apple folks, the software is PC only. So here we go..... The Kristal Audio Engine. A free and easy to use piece of software. Will record up to 16track's, has ASIO support, and you can use VST effects along with the good ones that are built in. And it has great support thru the forum, just like this site!

These 3 VST effects are the ones I use 99% of the time with Kristal, and I think they are must haves!

Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series

Digital Fish Phones (look to the left, the Fish Fillets rock!)
GlaceVerb, the best reverb I have found.

The following are a couple Audio Editors that I have used....

Tiny Wave Editor and Sound Engine Free

These don't have all the bells and whistles that Audacity has, but they import the files right back into Kristal, which means you don't have to line the tracks back up! A

nd this is a way cool plugin called VB Strip Tool. Striptool is a virtual channel strip offering various types of digital audio processing. This is a compleat channel that has a parametric EQ, compressor, and it sounds great.

Next is mine, and a few others, number one choice for a drum machine, and it is called Leaf Drums 2.33. When you add the ns_kit7free sounds to it you have the most realistic sounding free drum machine that you will find anywhere, and better than some you would pay for!

I have also used Hotstepper and HammerHead with great results. Don't think that these are "rap-dance" drum machines. Even tho they come with those sounds you can swap them out. All 3 work fine, and are free.

By using all of the software listed above with the Kristal Audio Engine you can have a compleat 16 track home recording setup, with some nice sounding drums, for FREE! The rest are some links to other VST effects that work well with Kristal. The links might be outdated, I didn't check them all. But the 3 listed above will give you most everything you need to make some good recordings!

A list of VST's.... http://www2.kvr-vst.com/

Freeverb2, and others. http://userpage.fu-berlin.de/~thman/VST/vst-eff2.htm

MDA VST Plugins. The Combo one is nice. http://www.maxim.abel.co.uk/vst/

Check out r8Brain. Instantly familiar controls work just like any traditional guitar.

There are numerous Variax models available
300 – low cost version costing around $450 if you can find it
500 - Which I have, now out of production but sometimes available on eBay etc.
600 – The replacement for the 300, strat style body with tremolo, approx $650
700 – Top of the range for the electric models - Carved-top ash over mahogany body with Tremelo
700b – Bass Version
705b – 5 String bass version
Acoustic 300 – New discount acoustic version
Acoustic 700 – Top of the line acoustic version.

The Variax guitar allows the user to select from 50+ guitar models at the flick of switch, modeling Strat, Tele, LP, Acoustic, Semi and many others. With the software based Workbench tool custom guitars can be created using the available bodies, and pickups, along with automatic custom tunings

Is It Good:
Firstly my background is not as a long term guitarist and I not a “tone snob” For me this guitar is perfect, I don’t care if it sounds EXACTLY like a Les Paul (though only 2 of 25 people correctly picked the real LP in an online sound test) what I care about is that I have 50+ different guitars to choose from all with totally distinct sounds including some very convincing Acoustic and Dobro models. I use the guitar exclusively in my home studio – I don’t play live, where it is perfect for switching guitars and tunings without leaving my chair. Many people online report extensive usage live where the ease of switching models between or mid song cannot be matched by any other guitar.

Finally a number of people have taken the electronics from the Variax and built their own custom guitars. Companies such as Warmoth sell prebuilt bodies but there have been many creative uses including adding standard pickups and midi pickups for the ultimate flexible guitar.

As a guitar the 500 is excellent. It has a Les Paul feel and after having it setup I have not had any significant tuning or similar issues. The 700 model has a top of the range body while the 300/600 has Strat style body, with, to me, slightly less of a quality feel.

Negatives:
A couple of minor negatives exist for me.

Firstly the guitar must be powered. This can be done either through the included XPS box with power provided through the guitar cable, or via a Line6 Pod XTL (XTL only) or using batteries. This power requirement and the extra cables necessary can be awkward at times, especially if, for example, batteries ran out on stage.

Secondly, while I have had no problems with my guitar, I constantly fear that, as a micro electronics and processor based technology, it will break and become unusable. Overall this does not seem to be a common problem but it’s a constant fear in a way that would not exist if I were using std pickups.

The high price of the models is also a concern for many.

Final Summary:
In summary, while not for the guitar purist, the Variax is an outstanding guitar for the studio or live playing musician

Some outstanding Variax Transplants

For those that don't know you can transplant the electronics from a Line6 Variax into other guitars and configurations. Most of the noise canceling earphones I looked at were too expensive. Then I started looking at sound isolating earphones. The best for the money are the Etymotic Research ER6i Isolator Earphones at about $87.50. That's a lot for a pair of earphones, but how much is your hearing worth? Before I had these I either had to crank the volume all the way up to listen on the train, or just sit and listen to the train rattling along. Now I can have the volume very low and hear everything fine, with almost no background noise. I even keep them in when I'm not listening to music, just to block out the train sounds. The earphones come with several different tips so you can fit them snugly in your ear canal. This reduces environmental sound levels by 30 to 35 dB. The sound quality is quite good. While I wouldn't advise wearing them for biking or driving, since you really can't hear what's going on around you, they're great for trains and planes.

New Song

I continue my experimental stage with another new song called Swim. The book focuses primarily and chords and has very little information on melody.

A great deal of the book focuses on the chord progression used in hundreds of hit songs, breaking them down and explaining how/why they work in a brief and simple manner.

Who is it for: Invaluable for the beginning songwriter (songwriter not musician) and a useful reference/guide for the more experienced songsmith.

My two cents: An outstanding book. As a beginning songwriter 2 years ago I struggled to get started but this book really set me in the right direction. I still use it almost every day as a reference for ideas on keys, chords, chord progressions and song structures. For me it’s an invaluable guidebook to songwriting.

My Studio Video Part 1

I realized that the 30 second vids my camera takes would be great for You Tube so I made one of my bedroom studio.
